What is Pewter?

Pewter is an alloy consisting of mainly tin, a completely non-toxic soft metal produced from tin ore, with small percentage of antimony and copper added to increase its strength.

Today, pewter gained its popularity is due to improved quality and it is the most versatile, adaptable of materials to produce work that is every bit as attractive. The finish of pewter pieces can be regulated to personal taste from a high gloss silver shine to a warm lustre or matt surface. It can be antiqued or coloured and it is an ideal medium for engraving and chasing. In addition, the keeping cool and hot effect of pewter is excellent as it can last longer than average.

Pewter is about one-thirtieth the cost of silver and it is ranks as the fourth most highly prized commercial metal after platinum, gold and silver.

Casting. Molten pewter is poured into
preheated moulds by using a ladle.
When the pewter is cooled, set,
the mould is opened and the pewter
casting is removed.

Filing. Extra burrs and uneven
edges are filed away from each casting
by hand.

Machining. The article is machined
to desired on a lathe.

Polishing. In addition to the hand
methods of polishing, innovative
polishing techniques are applied
to achieve the different
types of finishes desired.
New Zealand
Soldering. Individual components are
soldered to form an assembly.
When carried out with skill
and the correct materials,
the joins are strong and
difficult to detect.
NZ
Quality Control. Each finished
product has to undergo a
strict quality check before
it is wrapped and packed.

Looking after your Pewter

Hand wash a satin finish pewter in warm soapy water or mild detergent is all that is normally required.
The use of a dish washer is not be recommended because of the very high water temperature and usually rather strong detergents. After washing, toweled dry the pewter with a soft cloth and when completely dry, given a gentle polish with a soft duster.
Brilliant or highly polished finish pewter can be cleaned by using good brand of silver polish.
Do not use abrasive or caustic chemicals to polish the pewter. Wax on the candlestick can be removed under hot running water.
Wine and fruit juices should not be left in pewter longer than necessary. Do not expose pewter to direct flame or cook in pewter. Clean your pewter more frequently to assume its bright attractive appearance if you live by the sea as atmospheric salt will dull its lustre.
